How Stacey found Supervision

For Stacey it was 4 years after graduating. Working in 3 different locations. Ready to let go of the last days of the part time job that had been her safety net.

Her partner at the time  kept talking about getting a “real job” and that it would always be hard for her to make enough money out of being an acupuncturist.

She had invested so much in her training and really didn’t want to go back. So she needed to find another way forward to support herself and this career of choice.

She found the answer in group supervision. She joined a group with 5 other practitioners who were all in North London, who had all qualified in the last 5 years. They met in person every 2 months and would meet up in between or keep in touch over email. She no longer felt alone. She had somewhere to turn to when she was getting stuck. When she needed to talk about raising prices. Or deciding on what clinic day to let go off.

The level of support and compassion from the supervisor has been invaluable. Knowing that there is always somewhere to turn when I need some support and advice.

She found it so valuable that in 2020 she took the training to be able to offer these services to other acupuncturists.

Susan’s Journey to Supervision

The day after arriving in the UK in April 2003, Susan began a BSc course in acupuncture. Six months later, she got married and in the third year of the degree she was pregnant with her son.  Instead of dropping back a year, she worked hard to complete all course work and assessments to finish the degree 3 weeks early. She then jumped straight into practice 2 months after her son was born.  From there, Susan worked in three clinics, ran a multi-bed acupuncture project and finally in 2017 built a home clinic where she runs a busy family practice.

It was a bumpy road navigating issues with clinics, patients, business growth, family life, bereavement, being a mum, going through menopause and having some time with friends and family. With a husband who is qualified in physio, shiatsu, Seitai, ergonomics and medical anthropology, she always had someone to confidentially go over things, but it never quite worked.  Mixing work and home life left an unclean feeling around. She never felt able to share things coming up in the clinic with other colleagues when working with other therapists.

A very good friend in acupuncture college highly recommended supervision. Susan was familiar with the psychotherapists at the first clinic she worked at getting supervision, but it wasn’t yet clear that acupuncturists should have it.  It took a small shock in the clinic with a patient to decide to start monthly supervision in 2018. She noticed improvements in efficiency, happiness, boundaries and self-confidence.   With supervision she finally didn’t feel isolated in the field of acupuncture.

In 2020 Susan was paired up with Stacey in supervision training and since then they have met weekly to discuss everything from project ideas, personal life, and proactive planning in professional practice.  They work so well together that they decided to make supervision for acupuncturists accessible remotely or in person by starting this project.
